Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung visited Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri on September 17 to inspect their preparedness for Tropical Storm Noul as a number of provinces in central Vietnam have banned all vessels from travelling by sea.

The storm is expected to make landfall on September 18 in the area between Quang Binh and Quang Nam and bring heavy rains and strong winds across a vast number of coastal provinces, according to the national weather service.

In Thua Thien Hue Province, Deputy PM Dung inspected preparations for the storm at a fishing port before moving north to Quang Tri Province where he visited a storm shelter facility.

According to the national disaster management agency, provinces and cities where Tropical Storm Noul is expected to hit hardest, including Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang, have banned all fishing vessels from leaving the mainland.

Such localities also have plans to evacuate nearly 1.2 million people in a scenario where wind speeds reach over 100 kilometres per hour and evacuation plans will be updated in accordance with the development of the storm.

The border guard has also instructed over 58,000 fishing vessels with 285,000 workers onboard to navigate away from the danger zone.

As there is not much time remaining before the storm makes landfall, Deputy PM Dung has asked local authorities to watch essential systems closely in order to cope with it effectively and minimise human injury and property losses.

He also called for the readiness of search and rescue teams for the aftermath of Tropical Storm Noul.
