Phu Yen province has announced its intention to host the Miss ASEAN Friendship 2017 contest, held for the first time in Vietnam to highlight the beauty of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian cultures and traditions as well as to increase cooperation among participating countries. Nhat Ha& Le Toan reports.

It has been officially announced that the Miss ASEAN Friendship 2017 contest will be held at the Cendelux Hotel in Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province to search for the region’s next beauty queen.

This is the first time Vietnam will host the regional pageant. Held in the central province of Phu Yen from March 1 to July 2, 2017, the internationally recognised event will be an opportunity for Vietnam to showcase its natural beauty and culture to neighbouring countries and those around the world.

As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) marks its 50th anniversary, it is a time to reflect on its achievements and challenges and look towards the future. ASEAN has been successful in maintaining peace, promoting regional cooperation and enhancing community building. In the context of increasing geopolitical uncertainties, ASEAN’s external relations and its unity are more important than ever.

The contest aims to honour the beauty of Southeast Asian women and to create a platform for cultural exchange, with the purpose of increasing cooperation among ASEAN countries, promoting trade and tourism, and introducing the scenery of Phu Yen, Vietnam and other countries in ASEAN.

Programmes accompanying the contest will see the participation of experts and celebrities from countries in the bloc. Vietnamese artists taking part include the music director-composer Huy Tuan, executive director Hoang Cong Cuong, director of contestant admission supermodel Ha Anh, director of the catwalk supermodel Hoang Yen, contestant management consultant Miss Southeast Asia Phan Hoang Thu and MC Vu Manh Cuong, amongst others.

Miss ASEAN friendship 2017 is an opportunity to strengthen relationships and increase cultural exchange among countries of the region. The pageant forms part of an overall move to preserve and further advance ASEAN as a peaceful, stable and developed region.

To facilitate this goal, the search for the region’s beauty queen centres on natural beauty, friendliness and hospitality. Each contestant will show the organisers their tradition and cultural heritage in the hope of winning the crown for Southeast Asian beauty. Unlike other pageants, Miss ASEAN friendship 2017 does not have a semi-final round. Applications from ten nations in the region have been received since March 20 this year. The final round will be held from June 1 to July 2, with the coronation night in Tuy Hoa City on July 7.

The final round of the contest will include community and charity activities and trips to explore the beauty of Phu Yen. The coronation night will be held at Sao Mai theatre in Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen.

The Miss ASEAN Friendship 2017 is organised by Gala Viet Event Organisation and Tourism JSC according to certificate No.779/ GP- BVHTTDL issued by The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Vietnam Investment Review, Timeout and Thoi trang Tre magazines are the main media partners for the event.
