National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has asked Can Tho to build on its achievements over the past five years to record faster and more sustainable growth so that it merits its position as the centre of the Mekong Delta.
Ngan was speaking at the city’s Party convention, which opened on September 24.
She noted that the city should examine its shortcomings and work out appropriate coping measures in the future in order to bolster its development over the next five years.
The top legislator stated that Can Tho does not necessarily have to be number one across all areas but overall it cannot trail behind other regional provinces, adding that it needs to maximise its potential to create a ripple effect across the region.
She said it is Can Tho’s responsibility to proactively promote connections with other Mekong Delta provinces and across the southern key economic region.
In her remarks at the convention, Ngan also asked Can Tho to pay attention to environmental protection and its response to climate change, considering it an urgent matter for both the city and the wider region.
The parliamentary leader said Can Tho should view the processing of agricultural produce and seafood as a spearhead of its industrial sector.
