Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and a senior delegation of Vietnam arrived in Davos, Switzerland, on January 23, 2019, to attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (WEF) 2019, at the invitation of the WEF founder and the Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab.

Right after arriving in Davos, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended a session themed “Meeting of leaders on ocean action agenda”.
On January 24, 2019, within the framework of the WEF Davos 2019, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hosted a conversation with leaders of over 30 global groups with various brands among the top 500 global enterprises and the reliable partners of Vietnam.
The theme of the dialogue is “Promote dynamism and innovation in the age of the fourth industrial revolution”.
Olivier Shwab, Executive of WEF, was also on hand.
Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that Vietnam has now got 26,000 foreign investment projects (FDI) in operation with the total registered investment capital of USD 350 billion, including the world’s top economic groups such as Siemen, Novatis, Carlsberg, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Samsung, LG, Exxon Mobile, Ford and GE.
Vietnam has shaped the ever more transparent and internationally accessible legal framework and promoted the private economic area. Vietnam has now had the economic and trade relations with over 220 countries and territories with trade turnover having reached 185% of GDP.

President of Australian Senate makes official visit to Vietnam
President of the Senate of Australia Scott Ryan arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, on January 20, 2019, for an official visit to Vietnam on January 20-23, 2019, at the invitation of Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

On January 21, 2019, after the grand welcoming ceremony in honor of the Australian parliamentary delegation, the two sides held talks.
Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan expressed her elation at the effective cooperation between the Governments of Vietnam and Australia. Within the framework of strategic partnership, the two sides have formed 3 new mechanism of annual dialogue at ministerial level (foreign affairs, defense and economy) for the practical exchanges on the strategic issues of mutual concern.
The both-way trade turnover increases by over 7% each year to about USD 6.5 billion in 2017 and USD 5.72 billion in the first 9 months of 2018. Australia has now got 326 investment projects in Vietnam with the total investment capital of USD 1.9 billion, standing the 19th out of 128 countries and territories that have made investments in Vietnam.
The President of the Australian Senate affirmed that Vietnam is a lesson of success in terms of the economic growth. Australia wishes that Vietnam will continue to maintain its growth rate; the Government, Parliament and Senate of Australia have always stood shoulder to shoulder with Vietnam in the sustainable economic growth and undertake to support Vietnam in developing human resources.
Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan welcomes Australia for prioritizing to give ODA to Vietnam. Especially, that the Cao Lanh Bridge has been completed as schedule, plus the Tan Thuaan Bridge in the past, has made a positive and effective contribution to the social and economic development on the Cuu Long river delta of Vietnam.
The two leaders have unanimously agreed that the diplomatic relationship of the parliament is very important. IN recent time, the relationship between the National Assembly of Vietnam and the Parliament of Australia has continued to finely develop on the basis of the Agreement signed between the parliaments of the two countries./.
Anti-corruption work obtains all-round results
On January 21, 2019, the Central Steering Board on prevention and fighting of corruption announced at its 15th session under the chair of General Secretary cum President Nguyen Phu Trong, Chief of the Board, that the Board reviewed the work done and assessed the results of operation in 2018 and worked out the key tasks for 2019.

In 2018, the Steering Board assessed that the anti-corruption work had been vigorously deployed, obtaining a lot of all-round results. An important step had been made in building the institution and the anti-corruption prevention mechanism had been step by step perfected to guard against the happening of corruption.
In 2018, 650 cadres and Party members had been disciplined for committing corruption and deliberately doing things against the law. Also in 2018, illegal property had been distrained and appropriated with a value of VND 33,000 billion.
Speaking at the conference, General Secretary cum President Nguyen Phu Trong pointed out that the anti-corruption work has now become the trend and the movement that have helped stop step by step in a move to drive back corruption, thus making a good impression and consolidating confidence among the people, making an important contribution to building and revamping the Party so as to create a new zeal and new confidence.
It is necessary to continue to enhance the examination and inspection of various areas and sectors where a lot of negative phenomena have been disclosed. In 2019, efforts will be pooled to finalize the investigations of 21 cases and prosecute 22 cases according to the plan of the Steering Board./.
40th anniversary of Northern border war commemorated
On January 23, 2019, a gathering of wounded soldiers and martyrs’ families was held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Northern border war.

Vietnam has for the first time been listed in 60 top economies with the best innovation in the world, according to Bloomberg.
Viettel – a Vietnamese brand – has been listed for the first time among 500 brands of great value in the world
South Korea ranks top with Germany being the runner-up in the list. The USA from its 11th position in 2018 has been placed in the 8th position this year.
2019 is the 7th year in which Bloomberg has carried out this rating. The degree of innovation is rated on the basis of 7 criteria, including R&D, added value in production; labor productivity, efficiency in education and others.
In the Southeast Asian region, apart from Vietnam, there are 3 other countries of Singapore (ranks the 6th), Malaysia (tanks the 26th) and Thailand (tanks the 40th). Vietnam has got 45.92 points. The ratio of difference between men and women has increased with boys increasing faster than girls at birth or specifically, the sex ratio at birth is that 115.1 boys over 100 girls, a 3% increase over 2017.

Cu Mong Pass Tunnel opens to traffic
Cu Mong Pass tunnel on Highway 1A, at the section between Binh Dinh Province and Phu Yen Province, on January 21, 2019, was opened to traffic after 16 months of implementation.
Cu Mong Pass Tunnel cuts short the traffic time from 30 minutes if going on the Pass to 10 minutes through the tunnel
Cu Mong Pass Tunnel costs VND 3,920 billion and is completed 3 month ahead of schedule.
The tunnel is 6.6 km long, in which the road inside the tunnel is 2.6 km long with two lines running alongside and two motorized lanes with design velocity of 80km per hour.
It can be able to sustain the 7.0 earthquake. The tunnel can help Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces to exploit their potential and advantages in terms of economic development, as it helps cut short the travelling time in the area and guarantee traffic safety./.
