General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong paid an official visit to the Republic of France on March 25-27, 2018 at the invitation of the President of the Republic of France Emmanuel Macron.

On March 27, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The two leaders unanimously agreed that France and Vietnam has got a very special relationship intimately associated in terms of history, culture and society; expressed the joy that after 45 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations and 5 years of strategic partnership, the relations of the two countries have witnessed the finest development on the foundation of comprehensive, abundant and effective cooperation in all fields and it serves as the basis and motivation to take the Vietnam-France relations to a new height.
The two sides has also affirmed their common wish for the closer friendly relations and cooperation in the dynamic space of EU and ASEAN; unanimously to accelerate the completion of signing and ratifying the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and EU in 2018, thus creating the new motive force for economic, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and France and EU.
During his stay in France, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong met President of the Parliament of France Francois, French Prime Minister Ėdouard Philippe and President of the Senate Gėrard Larcher.

*On March 28, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam arrived in La Habana, the Capital of Cuba, starting the State visit to the Republic of Cuba at the invitation of the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, the President of the State Council and the Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro Ruz.
Right after arriving in La Habana, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong laid wreath at the Monument to Ho Chi Minh and met the Cuban people and students here.
The same day, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong talked with the staff of the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese community and students in Cuba.
During his stay in Cuba, General Secretary will have talks and audience with the senior leaders of the Party and State of Cuba and exchange the measures to enhance and lift further the efficiency of cooperation between the two countries in the coming time.
The visit to Cuba this time by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong continues to express the consistent solidarity and friendship of the Party, State and people of the two countries, consolidate the political trust and enhance cooperation in the economic, trade and investment fields between the two countries./.
Chairwoman of National Assembly attends IPU-138 and visits Netherlands
The plenary meeting of the 138th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-138) was opened on March 25 in Geneva, Switzerland under the theme “Policy solutions to strengthen global mechanisms on migrants and refugees”.

Attending the meeting, Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan shared that in the process of national development and international integration, Vietnam has always advocated ensuring the equality before the law for everyone and creating conditions for the people to have the right to migrate and move to work so as to promote the possibility of participating in social-economy, interaction and community connectivity and ensuring the promotion of democratic right, making a contribution to the national development.
This advocacy has been noted in the Constitution, in the relevant legal documents and guaranteed for its implementation in fact.
At the international level, Vietnam has supported the legal migration activities, particularly the labor migration and at the same time is determined to fight against unlawful migration, particularly the human trafficking and trans-national crimes.

*On March 26, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan arrived in La Hay, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, to attend the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Netherlands.

Vietnam hosts Greater Mekong Subregion’s Summit
The 6th Greater Mekong Subregion’s Summit (GMS 6) and the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Summit (CLV 10) have been opened on March 29-31, 2018.

This is one of the three biggest multi-lateral events being organized in Vietnam in 2018.
The meeting is to be organized on March 31, 2018 with the attendance of the leaders of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
On March 29, he Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) of the GMS was held at the Hanoi National Convention Centre. This is the meeting in preparation for the 6th GMS Summit in Hanoi on March 31, 2018.
The meeting focused on reviewing the preparatory work and the completion of all the documents to be submitted to the GMS leaders for approval.
Right after the GMS 6, the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Summit was held to approve the action plans and the cooperation orientation among the three countries with the support of such development partners as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank (WB), Japan and the Republic of Korea./.

The House’s construction was started on December 7, 2015 with the total invested capital of VND 43.3 billion on the land area of 1,269 square meters. This is a 4-storey building with the Wright Architecture Company (Japan) as the consulting firm.
Information, documents, lively images as witnesses of history in the process of exploring, determining and protecting Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes are on display in the House.
It is divided into 5 subjects, geographical position and natural conditions of Hoang Sa archipelago; Hoang Sa in the ancient bibliography under the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945); evidences of Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa archipelago from 1945 to 1074; evidences of Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa since 1974.
The architecture is the connection between the past and the present, proving that Vietnam has the process of determining and implementing sovereignty at the very early time over Hoang Sa archipelago, at least from the Nguyen Lord’s time.
The House is open daily, at 07.30 a.m. and 13.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday./.
GDP in Q1 increases by 7.38%, highest in 10 years

According to the statistical figures on March 29, GDP in Q1 is estimated to increase by 7.38% year on year, the highest in Q1 in 10 years.
Of the increase, industry and construction increased by 3.39%; services, by 6.7% and agriculture, forestry and fisheries, by 10.63%.
Q1 also recorded trade surplus of USD 1.3 billion, whereas trade deficit was put at USD 6.3 billion. CPI in March was reduced by 0.27% as against the previous month. On average, CPI in Q1 increased year on year./.
First Vietnamese doctor receives Nikkei Award
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Liem, expert in pediatric surgery in Vietnam, will fly to Tokyo, Japan, on June 14 to receive the Nikkei Award.

The reason for the award is that Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Liem has made reseaches of creative and breakthrough character, making a contribution to the scientific and technological development of the continent as well as the world. With this recognition, he is the first Vietnamese who has the honor to be awarded with this prize.
He is an expert in laparoscopy for children. He is also the author of 5 research works published on prestigious international journals. In the course of his work, he has created 9 completely new surgery methods.
He is now the director of the Stem cell – Gene Technology Research Institute Vinmec. He and his colleagues have carried out successfully the stem cell transplant for 30 children of cerebral palsy and autism./.
Prime Minister decides to expand Tan Son Nhat Airport to southwards
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has decided to expand Tan Son Nhat Airport in accordance with the plan on building another passenger terminal in the south.

At the regular meeting of the Government on March 28, 2018, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc decided to expand Tan Son Nhat Airport in accordance with the proposal of ADPI Consulting Firm of France. Specifically, a passenger terminal will be built in the south of the current terminal with the floor area of 200,000 square meters. This terminal is able to serve 20 million turns of passengers each year.
With the new passenger terminal, the total capacity of Tan Son Nhat Airport will be raised to 60 million passengers each year.
As Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said, this plan has been openly and transparently discussed and Ho Chi Minh City has agreed to it. He further affirmed that after the expansion, Tan Son Nhat Airport will be able to serve in the minimum 50 million passengers each year with dual purpose, both civil and military./.

Grab’s acquisition of Uber, Department of Competition requests for information
On March 26, 2018, Grab Vietnam announced information on Grab’s official acquisition of Uber in Southeast Asia.

Grab Vietnam said that this is the agreement on the biggest merger ever happened in this region, in which Grab will receive all business activities of Uber in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Uber will retain 27.5% of shares in Grab, and at the same time, CEO of Uber, Mr. Dara Khosrowshahi will join the leadership of Grab.
After the merger, this company will integrate business activities in on-line ticketing technology and food delivery of Uber in Southeast Asia into the Grab’s current financial technological platform.
The Department of Competition, under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, sent an urgent message, requesting Grab Taxi to provide information on its purchase of Uber in the Southeast Asian market, including Vietnam./.
