60 years after Vietnam’s ratification of Geneva Convention 1949
The seminar themed “the 60th anniversary of Vietnam’s approval of Geneva Convention 1949 on the International Humanitarian Law” was organized by the Foreign Ministry in coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on December 5, 2017.

That Vietnam has approved the 1949 Geneva Convention is the proof of Vietnam’s policy on promoting the respect of the international humanitarian law and enhance the implementation of the law, thus heightening the peace-loving, humanitarian and tolerant tradition of Vietnamese people.
60 years ago on June 5, 1957, President Ho Chi Minh signed the Note announcing that Vietnam had ratified the 1949 Geneva Convention on the international humanitarian law, including the improvement of the state of war invalid and wounded soldiers of the armed forces fighting on mainland and those of the sunken ships of the naval force; the protection of the prisoners of war and civilians in the war.
Speaking at the seminar, Assistant to th Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Vu stressed that Vietnam’s approval of the 1949 Geneva Convention is an important milestone, the proof to Vietnam’s policy on promoting the respect of the international humanitarian law and enhancing the implementation of the law in particular as well as international law in general, and at the same time, heightening the peace-loving, humanitarian and tolerant tradition of Vietnamese people.
Vietnam has been enhancing the implementation of this Convention through perfecting the law and mechanism at home and promoting international cooperation in order to improving the people’s awareness and boosting the humanitarian activities relating to overcoming the war aftermath and responding to the urgent situations concerning natural disasters, environmental pollution and so on.
Mr. Beat Schweiser, Head Representative of SCRC said that Vietnam plays an important role in enhancing the respect of the international humanitarian law. Vietnam is the country that has undergone many wars and is still suffering the grave consequences of the war, so more than anyone else, Vietnam has promoted the significance of the respect of the core values of the international humanitarian law. He also highly appreciated the cooperation between ICRC and Vietnam and wished that Vietnam continues to contribute to boosting the respect of the international humanitarian law, including the 1949 Geneva Convention.
Up to now, 196 member countries have approved the 1949 Geneva Convention./.

The Government has issued Instructive 16 with a lot of important solutions to development of information technological infrastructure and given priority to developing the digital infrastructure industry, smart agriculture, tourism and cities and boosting the start-up ecosystem.
The Prime Minister stressed that the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is an opportunity to carry out the nation’s ambition for prosperity, so we cannot lose it and we should grasp it. We should act resolutely and in time to overcome challenges to promote all advantages and make full use of all development opportunities successfully./.
Bài Chòi Singing recognized Heritage of Humanity
The 12th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Convention 2003 of UNESCO was held in the Republic of Korea on December 7, 2017 and the art heritage of Bai Choi singing of Central Vietnam was recognized by UNESCO as the Intangible Cultural Heritage representing Humanity.

Bai Choi singing has two official forms: the Bai Choi game and the Bai Choi performance. The Bai Choi game is related to the game of tablet playing in the bamboo huts during the Lunar Tet days.
This is the form of cultural and entertainment activity of the community of villages. The performers and families play an important role in protecting the folk art form by organizing the training among the young people in terms of singing and performing skills and in the method of making the tablets.
This is the 10th heritage of Vietnam being recognized and honored the Intangible Cultural Heritage representing Humanity./.
Political Bureau issues Regulations on disciplining Party members for committing violations
The Regulations 102-QĐ/TW on disciplining Party members committing violations has just been signed into force by Tran Quoc Vuong, Chief of the Central Investigation Committee, on behalf of the Political Bureau.

The Regulations puts forth the level of discipline for the violations of Party members concerning the political viewpoints and internal politics. The highest form is the expulsion from the Party for the violations of distortion and dissemination of wrong information on the line and policy of the Party and the State and the defamation of leaders of the Party and the State.
Especially those Party members who take advantage of the media and social network to distort, slander and smear the leading role of the Party, making bad impact on public opinion in an attempt to drag people not to follow the Party’s line shall be expelled from the Party.
The Regulations 102-QĐ/TW also clearly stipulates the level of discipline for those who violate the anti-corruption law. All those who have the actions such as money laundering, policy profiteering, collusion in corruption and other economic crimes shall be expelled from the Party./.
BOT Fees in Cai Lay are temporarily ceased, the Prime Minister says
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on December 4, 2017 has a working meeting with the leaders of the Transport Ministry and the relevant ministries and sectors and the leaders of Tien Giang Province to find the solution to the Cai Lay BOT fee collection.

The Ministry of Transport reported three plans on the Ca Lay Bypass. After listening to the report, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc decided to temporarily stop collecting BOT fees at the Cai Lay Bypass from January-February so that the Transport Ministry and other relevant ministries and sectors can be able to map out a plan on a scientific and practical basis.
At the same time it is suggested that those individuals who violate the law be handled seriously. On the other hand, it is necessary to reconsider the fee level and the position for the fee collection. Let no economic issue breed social instability, he stressed.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also requested the Transport Ministry should make aggregate evaluation of mechanism and policy concerning the BOT projects, thus giving boost to the non-stop fee collection where necessary./.

The Quarantine Animal and Plant Health Services of the US Department of Agriculture has recently announced the license effective from December 29 for fresh mangos of Vietnam to enter the US market.
This is the result of commitment by the leaders of the two countries during the Vietnam visit by President Donald Trump and it is mentioned in the Joint Statement between the two countries concerning the continuity of opening the door to the circulation of goods of Vietnam and the US.

Poet Mai Van Phan honored with Swedish Literature Award

Brand Finance – an international brand evaluation consultancy unit – has just announced a list of 50 most valuable Vietnamese brands in 2017 and Viettel tops the list with its brand value of USD 2.5 billion, tripling the value in 2016 and accounting for 22.8% of the total value of 50 top brands of Vietnam in 2017 in accordance with the rating of Brand Finance.
Among the TOP 10 of the most valuable brands, Vinamilk is valued at USD 1.36 billion; VNPT, USD 726 million and Vinhomes, USD 604 million./.
Vietnam Airlines welcomes 200 millionth passenger

Hanoi: US missile and bomb salvaged from river
The Hanoi Military Command in coordination with the Technological Centre for Defusing Bombs and Mines has just salvaged with safety one intact air-to-ground missile in Can Kiem Commune, Thach That District, Hanoi.
A bomb is salvaged at Long Bien Bridge abutment
On December 7, 2017, a representative of the Military Command of Thach That District said that a missile was discovered on November 29 by the local on the Tich River. When it was reported, the Capital City Military Command and then the General Staff of the People’s Army of Vietnam directed the unit concerned to salvage the missile.
The missile was determined as the US air-to-ground missile in 1972. It weighed 600kg and 4.2 m in length. It lay at a depth of 7m. In the end of the day, the missile was lifted safe and sound from the river bed.
Earlier on November 28, 2017, the Hanoi authorities had salvaged a US bomb at Long Bien Bridge abutment. The Long Bien Military Command took charge of salvaging the bomb. The bomb was 2m long, lying 5m away from Abutment P13 of Long Bien Bridge./.
